The Summer Olympics featured a range of races and distances events. There were three race walking events at the 2020 Summer Olympics including a men's and a women's 20-kilometre walk and a men's 50 kilometres walk. The races were held in a single-event format. The first men's events came at the 1908 London Olympics that featured three thousand meters and 10-mile distances. A 10-kilometre version was introduced during the 1912 Summer Olympics and it continued through 1952 (skipping three editions from 1928 to 1936). The first 3000m-long walk in the world was offered during the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. The 20-kilometer run by males became the norm for shorter distances and has been maintained ever since. The first men's 50-kilometer event, which was longer than women's, was held during the 1932 Summer Olympics. The event has continued to be annually held, except in 1976 when the IAAF cancelled the World Championships.
