The Promise is set in the Ottoman Empire's final days. It is a love triangle between Michael, a brilliant medical student and Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), an American journalist who is based in Paris. He travels to Constantinople to study and is greeted by Ana (Charlotte Le Bon) the Armenian woman who is in love with him. But, Chris Bale, an American photographer, who was sent to Turkey to document the first genocide in the 20th century, when the Turks exterminated Armenia's minority, is also in the film. A love triangle settles amidst the horrors of war.I chose to watch this film partly because I am a historian and partly due to the great acting talent of the leading actors. It was evident that this film vehicle is far from being worthy of their acting abilities. It was at times painful to realize how difficult it was to infuse any kind of authenticity or life into their characters. It is extremely difficult to feel emotionally connected with characters that don't seem real.
