Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr. (born August 14, 1959) is a famous American former professional basketball player. The legend says he is the best point guard of all time and is often considered to be a model for Stephen Curry. Johnson was a part of the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 13 seasons. After winning the national championship with Michigan State in 1979, Johnson was picked as the first pick during the 1979 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, leading the team to five NBA championships during their Showtime era. Johnson suddenly resigned in 1991, after declaring that he contracted HIV. However, he returned to play in 1992's All-Star Game and won the All-Star MVP Award. Following a protest by his teammates, Johnson resigned abruptly in 1991. However, he returned to the Lakers in 1996, aged 36 and was awarded the All-Star MVP Award. He led the league in regular season assists four times, and is also the NBA's most successful player in average assists per game in both the regular and playoff seasons.
