A veteran (from Latin vetus 'old') is someone with a significant amount of experience (and is generally skilled and respected) and has expertise in a particular profession or field. A military veteran is someone who has left the service in the military. Therefore, there are a large body of knowledge developed through centuries of scholarly research that seeks to define, understand and explain their experiences during and after their military service. Griffith and colleagues offer an overview of the research field that addresses veterans general health, transition from military service to civilian life, homelessness veteran employment, civic engagement and veteran identity as recurrent issues of investigation in the field.
