Caryn Elaine Johnson (born November 13, 1955) is known professionally as Whoopi Goldberg (/'wUpiWhoopi Goldberg/) is an American actor, comedian writer, and TV personality.A recipient of numerous accolades, she is one of 17 entertainers to be awarded the EGOT which includes an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award as well as an Academy Award ("Oscar") and the Tony Award. She was awarded the Mark Twain Prize in American Humor in 2001. Goldberg started her stage career with the one-woman show Spook Show. The show was renamed into Broadway under the name Whoopi Goldberg and ran from 1984 to 1985. The show's recording was a success and she won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. Her breakthrough role in film was in 1985, when she played Celie the woman who is treated badly in the Deep South in Steven Spielberg’s period drama film The Color Purple. She received the Golden Globe Award as Best Actress in Motion Picture Drama.
